Thank you for your interest in supporting our community by volunteering. Below are the current volunteer opportunities along with instructions on how to volunteer for them.

Bar J Bustle Competitive Trail Ride - Aug. 30 – Sept 02

Ham ops needed for horse event, Labour Day weekend

I’m looking for ham operators to provide safety communications for an equestrian event near Calgary Alberta, Labour Day weekend Aug. 30 – Sep2.

The course is a 25-mile cross-country loop. Ham operators provide safety communications and tracking along the route. I need 3 to 8 operators, one at the base, the others spread along the course. Four-by-four vehicles are an asset, as are ATVs and UTVs, but I can find locations for hams with cars. Several positions are 2-5 km hike-in with handheld radios.

The ride is called the Bar J Bustle Competitive Trail Ride. It takes place Aug. 30 – Sept 02 (Friday to Monday), with the actual ride on Saturday and Sunday. Base is 55 km north west of Calgary, south west of Water Valley.

The event provides free camping at the base location from Friday afternoon to Monday morning. Accommodations is an open field, you supply tent, trailer, whatever you want or have. Portapotties are supplied.

Meals for volunteers are supplied, from Friday night until Sunday lunch, and they will have some potable water, but best to bring your own beverages of choice.

There is a ride briefing for riders on Friday night. Very useful for the hams, but not mandatory. The actual ride takes place on Saturday and Sunday. You can stay Sunday night, and head home Monday.

To volunteer with NARC at this event please contact Fred by email.

Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) - October 18-20, 2024

JOTA-JOTI is the world’s largest digital Scout event taking place online and over the air. The educational event brings together more than 2 million Scouts every year in October for a weekend of Scouting and friendship. Young people can learn about communications technology and connect with fellow Scouts from over 174 countries.

Most likely hosting groups on Saturday, October 19.

There is a plan developing to host a large number (200-300) scouts at the Devon campground. This group will be looking for volunteers.

In addition to the above, there is a group that may be hosted at the VE6HM site. Again volunteers will be required.

Additional information coming as the plans solidify. Please put these events on your calendar and watch for notification of volunteer signup opening. Thanks for helping out.

Hypothermic Half Marathon (Running Room) - February xx, 2025

The amateur radio community has supported this event for many years, with this being a ham favourite (probably due to the delicious buffet afterwards). As usual, we provide radio communications along race course with net control being run out of NARCpac located at the start/finish line, where we usually host one of the medical staff.
