Wild Timber Competitive Trail Ride - September 4-6

We are looking for ham operators to provide safety communications for an equestrian event near Sundre Alberta, Labour Day weekend Sept. 4 – Sept. 6.

The course is a 25-mile cross-country loop. Ham operators provide safety communications and tracking along the route. We need 3 to 8 operators, one at the base, the others spread along the course. Four-by-four vehicles are an asset, as are ATVs and UTVs, but most locations are accessible by cars. 

The ride is called the Wild Timber Competitive Trail Ride. It takes place Sept. 4 – Sept. 6 (Friday to Sunday), with the actual ride on Saturday.  Base is 55 km south Sundre, north west of Calgary

The event provides free camping at the base location from Friday afternoon to Monday morning. Accommodations is an open field, you supply tent, trailer, whatever you want or have. Porta-potties are supplied. Family members are welcome, but please keep dogs at home for this CTR.

Meals for volunteers might be supplied, from Friday night until Saturday lunch, but at the moment can't be promised. There will be a potluck dinner Saturday; hams do not have to bring anything if they don't have the space or refrigeration to keep it. They will have some potable water, but best to bring your own beverages of choice.

There is a ride briefing for riders on Friday night. Very useful for the hams, but not mandatory. The actual ride takes place on Saturday. You can stay Saturday night, and head home Monday.

Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) October 17th, 2026

JOTA, or Jamboree On The Air, is a scouting event that provides an annual opportunity for scouts (and guides) around the world to connect via amateur radio. NARC and ARES will be hosting a group at the VE6HM site and the Devon Lions Campground Map. (set your view to Satellite)

We need help demonstrating as may modes of operation as we can to small groups of Scouts (and guides) for 5 to 10 minutes at a time throughout the day.  If you have the time and the gear please come and play Ham radio amongst the kids and share your enthusiasm for our hobby in the park or at the HM site, or in your Shack. Your help is needed to make this a success. 

If you are coming to the Campground, we will operate out of the Gazebo in the park that is pinned on the map above. There are several 120V outlets and picnic tables available in the Gazebo. Bring a power Bar, extension cord, and/or a battery box.  The Scouts will feed us Lunch but you will need to "be prepared" and bring your own "mess kit" (Plate, knife, fork, spoon, and cup).  Also in the spirit of being prepared, dress warm and bring gloves. The Scouts will build a fire for us in the Gazebo but it can still get chilly this time of year. Finally, consider bringing a comfortable lawn chair because the picnic tables in the Gazebo have no padding or back support. And being comfortable will make it much more enjoyable for everyone.
